Frequently asked

What people in your position usually ask first.

Lawyer or migration agent — what's the difference?

Both can lodge visa applications. Lawyers have an LLB / Juris Doctor and are admitted to practise law in Australia. Migration agents are registered with MARA but don't need a law degree. For complex matters (refusals, AAT appeals, ministerial intervention, sponsorship disputes), a lawyer is usually the better choice because they can give legal advice and represent you in higher tribunals.

What does a migration lawyer cost?

Fees vary widely: a simple partner visa might be A$3,000–A$8,000 in professional fees; complex AAT appeals A$8,000–A$25,000+; business and investor visas A$15,000–A$50,000+. Department of Home Affairs application fees are separate and can add A$1,000–A$10,000+. Always ask for the costs agreement in writing.

What if my visa is about to expire?

Tell us in the form — we prioritise urgent matters. Generally, you must apply for a new visa before your current one expires, or apply for a bridging visa. Going overstaying can lead to a 3-year exclusion. Speak to a lawyer urgently.

Can I appeal a visa refusal?

Most visa refusals can be reviewed by the Administrative Review Tribunal (the AAT/ART). Strict time limits apply — usually 21 days from the decision letter. The matched lawyer will assess whether an appeal is worth pursuing.

Are you a law firm?

No. Lawyer Reviews is an independent publication. We are not a law firm and don't give legal or migration advice.

What does it cost me?

Nothing. We don't charge consumers. Lawyers pay us a fixed enquiry fee — identical for every lawyer in the practice.
